Andy Murray changed shirts during his Hopman Cup final against Robredo when he was losing. Unfortunately, his luck didn't change.

There hasn't been any shirtless posts in a while, but I'm sure there'll be plenty in the Australian heat. Looking forward to more of Andy :)

I was at the Brisbane International yesterday for the day session, and I must say it's heaps better than going in the night, cos you get to see the players practicing and walking about (no stalking though :coughs:). Before the matches were scheduled to start, we found Marcos Baghdatis practising with Malisse - but I'm not sure if it's really Xavier cos his hair looks different and he's got a bit of a fat roll happening on his tummy.

Then, Clijsters came on to a court next to Marcos and began practising her power shots. Man, she was on some kind of form! Even Marcos wasn't hitting that hard :P I was busy being amazed by Clijsters' hard hitting that I didn't even notice Justine coming in from the other side. When I saw her I was like "OMG that's Henin!". She must've heard cos she looked up at me and smiled. She looked at us again when we got the camera out to take a photo and smiled again (....or at least it looked like a smile at the time, but looking back at the photo, it was more of a frown.... I blame the sun lol)

Justine looks fit as f#ck, like a tank. I thought she was kindof cute, but then again I'm biased. Whilst doing her stretches, she was continuously looking over at Kim. Kim also made a few glimpses towards Justine to see how she was faring. Sizing up the opponents eh? ;) At this point, I'd say Kim would win quite handily. During the practise session, Justine was often hitting balls long (especially on the forehand side) whilst Kim was just blasting winners left right centre. I know it was just a practice session, but Justine looked unimpressive next to Kim. However, Kim needs to "get it tOgEtHeR" on her serve, cos she had a massive fail when trying to hit the ball cans as target practice. She got like 1 out of 15 before we got tired and left. Afterwards we went into the stadium for the scheduled matches (Gasquet vs Niemenen; Ivanovic vs Dokic; Henin vs Petrova).

Gasquet is just the cutest thing in the world :hearts: He had a lot of crowd support in his match (which he won) and afterwards, we walked past him on the grounds. He was walking around with a smile on his face and looked so adorable :P :P Didn't get a photo though.

The Ana vs Jelena match was quite boring compared to Gasquet. There were just so many errors from both women! Ana's serving woes are still not over, with the ball toss going wayward at times. It was a lot better than what we saw from her last year, but still, you'd think she'd have sorted out the ball toss over the December break??! Apart from that, Ana looked good in that purple dress. She seems almost goddess-like with her glowing skin tone and pretty face (and some seriously nice set of legs... she's just so goddam hot!). The crowd were going for Dokic more, but Ana's vocal fans made up for it. I think Dokic can make a big run at the AO like last year (her form was up/down in the match, but I just know she'll pull it together).

Afterwards, we walked past Daniela Hantuchova. It seems like noone knew her, she was just walking by herself. Daniela looked more like a model than a tennis player. Walking around the other courts, we saw Lucie Safarova vs Anna Lena Groenewold and Casey Dellequa vs Karatantcheva. Unfortunately, Sesil is not as hot as I expected... oh well....

The last match of the day was Henin vs Petrova. Most of the Serbian fans had left the stadium by then, so there were a few empty seats. Justine got a huge applause from the crowd when she walked on court. The match itself was a bit boring with both players making a lot of errors. Justine's forehand needs a bit of work, but her backhand is just magic. Her retrieving skills were impressive - she'd often use defensive slice shots to get back into position and get on the offensive. Her volleys were also on song that day and she made good gets of some tough attempted passing shots by Nadia. I think she needs to come to the net more often. I was also quite impressed with Petrova's serve: so fluid and natural-looking. She just needs to get her head sorted out (as we all know....)

It was set to be a repeat of the Aussie Open QF, but Kuznetsova managed to regroup after her mid-match choke to beat Serena 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 in the QF of the 2009 French Open. There was choking going on from both sides, but it was a great match nonetheless. Sh1tlana no more!

Sexy Sveta managed to show her ass to a ball boy and *seemingly* give the hot line judge a boner during the match. Meanwhile, Serena was being her usual self in the post match interview:

"In the third (set) I had an opportunity but I was a bit tight. I basically handed it to her. It was like: 'Here, do you want it? 'Cos I don't.' And she was like: 'OK.'"

Victoria Azarenka, star of the near future

The 2009 French Open has thrown up many surprises, but the breakthrough of Victoria Azarenka should not be considered one of them. The Belarusian reached her first Grand Slam quarter final in 14 attempts and came close to knocking out in-form world number one Dinara Safina.

Safina eventually won a three-set encounter, but not before being blown away 6-1 in the first set. Azarenka was in stunning form early on, serving at 93% on her first serve and hitting 10 winners and only one unforced error.

The Russian had only lost five games in her four matches before facing Azarenka but looked lost for a response against her opponent’s aggressive approach.

The form Azarenka presented against Safina did not come out of the blue. She has been in great form all year, winning at Brisbane, Memphis and most notably the Sony Ericsson Open, where she beat Serena Williams in the final.

This has helped Azarenka into the top 10 of the world rankings and her progress can be expected to continue, although she needs to address the problems that contributed to her defeat by Safina.

Azarenka has always been an emotional, temperamental player, but she lost control against Safina and allowed frustration to shake her focus. This was manifested by a series of costly double faults that only served to add her to dissatisfaction.

There is a large pool of young talent in the women’s game, with many players capable of beating the top stars. Azarenka, junior world champion in 2005, will soon be considered one of the players to be beat rather than one capable of causing an upset. She is one player I will be following closely at Wimbledon.

Here are some random pics from the Madrid Open tennis tournament. I was quite impressed with the stadium, especially the massive vertical walls behind the stands leading to the roof. The practice courts look kinda odd with the red curtains, but odd in a good way :P

The dust flying around in Djokovic's match was atrocious, but at least a photographer was able to make it look like he had a halo (halo, haloooo).

Richard Gasquet, another case of too much too young

Richard Gasquet’s provisional suspension for a failed drugs test is the latest in a long line of tennis doping controversies. The Frenchman has stated his innocence, but should he receive a full ban it should not be necessarily assumed that his career has been ruined.

Jennifer Capriati’s wayward teenage years appeared to typify the phenomenon of tennis ‘burnout’, whereby talented young players go off the rails, unable to cope with the pressure, riches and difficulties of top level sport.

Capriati did not play on the WTA tour for 15 months after being arrested for marijuana possession and shoplifting at the age of 17. Her reaching of the French Open semi final as a 14-year old appeared likely to be the biggest achievement of her career.

However, Capriati bounced back to forge a highly successful professional career that included three grand slam victories. Gasquet, a child prodigy like Capriati, will hope the similarities stretch far enough for him to be a multiple grand slam winner.

Guillermo Coria bounced back from a failed nandrolone test to reach the French Open final, although his suspension was overturned due to the faulty legal supplements he was taking. Nonetheless, the pressure of a high profile drugs case must have been distracting, but was not a barrier to a successful career.

The road back will not necessarily be an easy one for the world number 23. Petr Korda and Martina Hingis are just two top players to have had glittering careers cut short by doping offences, although injury was the main reason for the ‘Swiss miss’ retiring early.

Tennis players who succeed at a young age are clearly more prone to these drug-related problems (Gasquet, Korda, Coria, Capriati and Hingis were all outstanding juniors who started on the adult tours as teenagers).

Whatever happens to Gasquet some lessons need to be learned from the latest tennis doping case – junior stars need to be protected from the pressure of tennis fame and prepared for professional careers.

ATP World No. 4 Scales The O2 To View Bulls-Eye; Issues Rallying Cry For Fans To Register For Priority Access To Tickets Ahead Of General Sale

London, England – Andy Murray returned to the UK on Wednesday after winning the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, and made his intentions clear for the remainder of the year by setting his sights on The O2 arena – host venue to the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the season-ending climax to the 2009 ATP World Tour.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will determine the official year-end South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings and will also crown the official 2009 ATP World Tour Champion. While qualification to the event is coveted by many, it is earned only by the elite eight singles players and doubles teams capable of demonstrating sustained excellence across the ATP World Tour’s 62 tournaments, and the four Grand Slams, throughout the season.

Murray marked his own intentions to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by scaling the roof of The O2 arena, where tournament organisers had placed a special bulls-eye target.

“It was amazing to be on the roof of such an iconic building – the view of London from all the way up there was just incredible,” said Murray. “The event has a great history and means so much to the top players - it’s great to think the race to the No.1 ranking spot and the title of ATP World Tour Champion could come down to the wire in London. I’m hopeful that I will be back here in November to really give UK tennis fans something to shout about, in what will be the biggest indoor tennis event of the year.”

Murray has got off to a career-best start this season, winning ATP World Tour titles in Doha, Rotterdam and Miami, as well as reaching the final at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The 21 year old’s latest performances have propelled him to within touching distance of World No. 3 Novak Djokovic, with just 170 ranking points now separating the Brit and Serb. Based on his recent surge in South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings points, Murray looks to be in a strong position to earn one of the eight coveted berths for this year’s climactic event, taking place in London for the first time in the its 40-year history.

Next stop for Murray is the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, the third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year, where he will get his 2009 clay court campaign underway next week.

“I haven’t got that many rankings points to defend between now and Wimbledon so hopefully I can make some more ground on the top guys during the clay court season,” said Murray.

Murray, who has already captured 11 ATP World Tour titles in his young career, issued a rallying cry for fans to come and support him at The O2 in November, saying: “The crowd can make all the difference against the world’s best players and the prospect of playing at the end of the year in front of a home crowd at The O2 arena is huge.”

Murray was joined on the roof of The O2 by former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash. The Australian, who qualified for the final showdown in 1987 at New York's Madison Square Garden, believes that the crowds in London will be in for a treat as the 2009 ATP World Tour comes to a climax at The O2 this November.

"It's been a fantastic start to the year, and the prospect of everything going down to the wire at the last tournament of the season in London is extremely exciting for everybody. Andy has been playing really well so far this year and if he can continue that form through to the rest of the season, along with all the support he will get at The O2, I expect him to be in the mix for the No.1 ranking and the title of 2009 ATP World Tour Champion," said Cash.

Jelena Jankovic scored her first title of 2009 (and 10th career title) on the red clay of Marbella, beating Carla Saurez Navarro in 3 sets: 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to take the Andalucia Tennis Experience trophy in Spain.

I don't care if this was a "Mickey Mouse" tournament - the significant thing is that Jankovic's slump may be over! This was a typical JJ match with a mini choke and plenty of drama as she served for the match leading 5-1 in the third. Let's see how Jelena's game shapes up over the rest of the clay court season.

Last week, we had a "couple" of sightings of tennis players with their partners.

First up, Andy Murray and long time girlfriend Kim Sears were spotted cuddling in Miami airport. So cute :P

Then Maria Sharapova and Charlie Ebersol were snapped walking together at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. Sharapova tried to pull an elegant look, but I'm sorry, that dress was a massive fail!

After Serena Williams lost in the first round of Marbella, Dinara Safina is set to take over the WTA #1 ranking on April 20, 2009. Serena needed to win Marbella and defend her title in Charleston in order to stay on top. It seemed pretty obvious to me that Serena wanted to stay at #1, cos why else would she enter Marbella whilst being injured?!

Here's what Dinara had to say about her achievement (via everyjoe):

“It’s a great honor to reach the No. 1 ranking and it is a dream that every girl who has ever wanted to play professional tennis shares. It is even extra special for me since my brother Marat was able to reach the No. 1 ranking and I am happy to share this achievement with him.

There’s no question that while I am very proud of my results over the past year, I would have liked to reach this achievement in a different manner. I hope to prove to everyone over the coming months that I merit the honor of being World No. 1.”

It's a shame she's been playing like a hot mess these past few months (with her most recent loss being to Sam Stosur 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of Miami). But it should be noted that Dinara was in quite some form last year, having reached 8 finals in the 9 tournaments she played between May and September!

Dinara and Marat are the first brother / sister combination to reach the pinnacle of professional tennis rankings, so congratulations!

Andy will face Novak Djokovic in the final, who overcame a frustrated (and perhaps slightly deluded?) Federer in the other 2009 Miami semifinals.

I thought Verdasco would win this, but he was clearly troubled by a lingering knee injury - hope things go better for poor Fernando. This result (along with Nadal's loss to Del Potro) has thrown my Miami picks into the depths of pathetic, but as a Murray fan I'm happy he won! Game Set Match challenge rankings update

I'm getting quite addicted to the ATP Game Set Match challenge where you have to predict the winner of each match and get points for the correct picks. In the first tournament (Indian Wells) I came 3901 out of 15115 people, but for the current tournament in Miami, I'm only ranked 7307. My finalist picks for Miami are Nadal def Federer, but I picked Murray to go out to Verdasco in the quarters - which I don't think will happen lol so I'll probably do pretty bad :P

wai808kiki came 1st in Indian Wells and is still topping the leaderboards along with Tennisbob on 259 points. I have 210 points so far, so am quite a long way behind but whatever - it's fun!

Vera Zvonareva defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-3 to advance into the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Azarenka wasn't too impressed with her form, and pulled a "Serena".....

Here is a direct quote from Azarenka's 2009 Indian Wells interview after losing (via Heraldnet):

It was a good match and all, but I for one was more intrigued by the fact that both Camilla Belle and Caroline Wozniacki were sitting in Verdasco's box! Say what?! Update: But Fernando only followed one girl back to her hotel room after the match ;)

It all started when Eurosport commentators said Camilla was Verdasco's fiancee. The next day, they said that he and Caroline were an item. The next next day, both girls were snapped together in his box. Verdasco's hot so there's obviously a lot of people interested in his love life... and secretly hoping to be his next slut :cough:

Jelena Jankovic was in a not-so-good mood at her interview after her 2nd round loss in Indian Wells.

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Q. The Djokovic family is working on a tennis tournament as you know. I would like to know your thoughts on what that means for the future of the tennis in your country and as well...
JANKOBITCH: I can't answer that now. I'm not in the mood.

Q. What will you do between now and Miami?
JANKOBITCH: I don't know. Train, probably, if I can.

Q. Will you go back to Florida? Back to Bollettieri's?
JANKOBITCH: I don't know.

Jelena Jankovic lost to Anastasia Pavluchenkova 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the 2009 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Read her moody interview excerpts here!

It's frustrating watching her play this bad, so I can't even begin to imagine how she's feeling. Get it together Jelena :grrrrr: At least she's figured out what's wrong - Jelena admitted that she's lost her reaction and speed and is working on getting it back.

She may have only played 1 match (and lost) at the BNP Paribas Open, but Sharapova continues to draw attention from the media off court.

Maria visited the Charter Club at Indian Wells Tennis Garden for some photo opportunities, and then signed autographs for her fans.

Maria Sharapova played her first tournament in 6 months, pairing with Russian Elena Vesnina in the doubles at Indian Wells. They lost in the third set super tiebreak.

Although they lost, this has to be a good sign that Maria will start playing singles soon :excited:

Here are some pics of Arantxa Sanchez Vicario with her newborn baby girl and husband. I remember back in the days when I was supporting Sanchez when she'd face Steffi Graf (and lose lol).

The baby is just one week old and a caesarean was needed. It's so tiny and cuuuuutteee! Btw, her husband's name is Jose Santacana and this is Arantxa's second marriage. (and, yes, it looks like there's a huge bug on his shirt)
